Hare’s Pond History:
In 1986 with the assistance of the Iowa Forestry Reserve, 10,000 White Oak, Burr Oak, Green Ash, Cedar, Walnut, and Poplar trees were planted on 17.4 acres.
In 1988 an old Insley H560 Hi Ho was purchased to start the process of widening and deepening a small stream that starts from a natural spring and tile outlets that have never gone dry since the Hare's came to the farm in 1952.
In the fall of 1990 the first spillway was added.
In 2000, the second spillway was installed under the deck on the second pond. The D.N.R stocked this pond with Bluegill, Bass, Crappie, and Bullheads in 2001.
The pavilion in the park started out as a roof over a trailer house (16’x48’). This trailer was moved back and another of the same size was added.
Lumber for part of the second addition came from the original Rowley school that dates back to 1875. The trailer was later removed.
Because this tract of land sits in the middle of the farm, it was decided in 1999 to preserve it. The D.N.R was approached with the idea. Their plan included destroying part of what we had worked so hard to build. In the summer of 2001 the property was saved with 42.89 acres in ponds, filter strips, wetlands, and campground area, and 17.75 acres of forest.
On January 9th, 2002, and organizational meeting was held with members from different organizations around the area to form a Board of Directors for a non-profit organization to over-see and manage the area. It was named Hare’s Pond Recreational Park, Inc. Bylaws were written.
Article 1: It shall be a policy of this corporation to solicit contributions, gifts, and grants to develop campgrounds and maintain, manage and preserve existing facilities for fishing, camping, hunting, horseback riding, hiking, archery, weddings, reunions, and other family or business type gatherings. All activities will be done in such a way as to preserve the Corporations (501c3) status.
Rezoning from “A1” agricultural to “A2” agricultural was applied for and approved March 4th, 2002.
Iowa Certificate of Incorporation was applied for and received March 7th, 2003, under the name of Hare’s Pond Recreational Park, Inc.
Federal Employer Identification number was applied for and received March 15th, 2004.
On March 20th, 2003 a quit claim deed was recorded at the recorder’s office, with the transfer of ownership of 64 acres donated by Richard and Glen Hare to Hare’s Pond Recreational Park, Inc and its board of directors.
In 2008 Robert J. Murphy, Attorney at law graciously filled out an application for a 501c3 tax exemption and today we are still waiting for approval.
